The NTH Memorial Scholarship

am

Intent of the scholarship:

In memory of a loving, compassionate mother, who worked very hard for over 50 years supporting her four brothers to go through school, supporting her husband and her ten children. NTH was a woman who lived a simple life, knew what it was like to face life’s struggles, and who took utmost joy in the success of her brothers, children and grandchildren. This Scholarship in memory of her name is an opportunity to assist a student perhaps during a difficult time and encourage a student to always give their best, never give up, and always pursue their dreams.

Scholarship amount:

2 x $1000 to 2 students from my High School who’ll be attending a community college that went to during high school and summer classes during college.

HISTORY OF THE “NTH” SCHOLARSHIP

At eight years old, she would walk miles to deliver baguettes, and on the way back she would carry a big bundle of wood 3/4 for sell, 1/4 to keep for the family. Supporting my grandmother to raise her four older brothers.

Even after the war and we were struggling so much just to have food on the table. She’d eat less, just so her children could eat more and focused on schooling.

I grew up knowing a super generous Mom. She’s always on the look out to help the people in need. I remember she donated to temples, fed the hunger, free the birds, fish, and eels. She taught me straight out of the Dharma:

“Conquer the angry one by not getting angry; conquer the wicked by goodness; conquer the stingy by generosity, and the liar by speaking the truth.

[Verse 223]”
― Gautama Buddha, The Dhammapada

Some of you may know, I grew up modestly. We struggled financially as we start our lives in the States. I managed to get good grades so I could become a healthcare provider. I remember received scholarships to attend university. I was so much relieved that my Dad didn’t have to carry a big burden.

Creating this “NTH Memorial Scholarship Fund” will help me honor mom in a way I know will continue to make her proud.  This scholarship award enables me to spend time each day while working reflecting on my wonderful memories of my mother and all the great values she instilled in me. Mom was so giving and supportive, and this is just one way that we can pay tribute to her and fulfill her selfless and encouraging legacy

Part of my 2020’s Goal was to give $500/mo. So, I’m proud to say that I’m ahead of the schedule.

In March, I also wrote a check of $50 to donate to one of my co-worker who house was burnt down. She didn’t have the right kind of insurance where they didn’t compensate for the lost items.

I’m just keeping myself grounded by giving people who are struggling and who are in needs. Greed is something that boiling and hard to be rid of, especially when you were struggling so much, and then when you gain so much you tend to forget. I want to stay humble and grounded. I end here with a great quote from John Holmes:

“There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.”

    • Thank you for your kind words. I wouldn’t want to disappointed her.

I am the way I am today is credited to my Mum. Many years has gone by after she passed away, I still want to be more like her. When I fix appliance or even my lawn mover, I think of her. She was a great mechanic too beside being a great entrepreneur. 🙂

  2. Really a wonderful and noble gesture. Very nice to hear and I am sure very nice for some lucky students! FIRE is benefiting others as well hey!

    • Thank you for the kind words. You’re absolutely right, FIRE is benefiting others as well. If we have surplus, why not give a little? 🙂
